Ribbon Cutting at Whitemore Park |
April 21st marked the day that I was born some 23 odd years ago. It also just so happened to be the date of a pretty significant event for the City of Annapolis . City officials, ‘Friends of Annapolis Parks’, and a clergyman all gathered at Clay and Calvert Street to commemorate the rebuilding of ‘the Shining Star of the City’, Whitemore Park . (Friends of Annapolis Parks) When Mrs. Janice Hayes-Williams, City Councilman Trumbeaur’s lovely assistant, invited me to the event I knew that I had to be in attendance. I rushed from my part time job at Bed Bath and Beyond, after all, it was my birthday, I could bend the rules a little bit. As my colleague Jessica Snowden and I arrived on the scene we were immediately greeted with a bucket of water and a hose that never stopped. I proceeded to roll up my sleeves.
After some planting and mulching, courtesy of Annapolis City volunteers and supporters, the podium was rolled out amongst the towering trees that cascade the park. Reverend Simms prepared the hearts of all who were in attendance and paved the way for Mayor Cohen to highlight, as he so elegantly stated, ‘the sweat equity’ put in from the community.
During the commencement I reflected on my life… I volunteer on my birthday, I helmet an innovative new nonprofit for Urban American communities, and I take off work to plant flowers. I don’t have it half bad.
